The Junior Kindergarten (JK) (brochure) program is designed specifically for young children as a bridge between preschool and Kindergarten. Children entering this program must be 4 or 5 years old to enter the program. Your child may be age appropriate for Kindergarten, but may need another year to develop either socially, physically, academically, or emotionally.
When looking for Kindergarten readiness, it is important for the parent to look at the whole child and determine if he or she is developing in all areas, not just academically. Giving your child the "gift of time" provides the child an enviornment where a successful experience fosters growth in interaction skills and leads to a strong sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. These are critical elements in the early years of learning.
Junior Kindergarten children are involved in activities designed to meet individual needs, learning styles, and interests. The learning experiences have been created and developed to help them increase their skills in decision making, problem solving, memory compression, and creativity.
The curriculum provides opportunities for the children to express themselves freely through play, manipulative games and toys, creative materials, and large and small muscle materials. Phonological awareness, phonics, basic letter and number formation, math activities, and science centers are an integrated part of our instruction.
Children will grow socially and spiritually through regular religious instruction and weekly Chapel. Classes in Art, Music, Spanish Computer Technology and Physical Education are taught by specialists once or twice weekly. All of these experiences provide educational opportunities to enhance and enrich the individual development of the child.
